2008 Beijing Olympics - United States History in the Making
Last night I was glued with great anticipation on the television set watching NBC's coverage of the 2008 Beijing Olympics. In her first ever Olympic Games, Rebecca Soni won the Gold Medal in the 200m breaststroke in world record time beating Australian's Leisel Jones. Having a great start and keeping close to her competition for 150 meters, she pulled away the last 50m from her most toughest competitor Leisel Jones almost a full body length for the win. Surprisingly to me, she was not even favored to win according to the television announcer but she made him a believer with her over one second advantage win despite placing 1st in the semis. Congratulations on winning Silver and a Gold Medal - United States History in the Making at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

Ryan Lochte from Daytona Beach, Florida competed against his fellow countrymen Aaron Peirsol last night in the men's 200-Meter backstroke. As the nation watched, the Russian Arkady Vyatchanin setting up the pace for most of this race, Ryan Lochte took over the race winning it in world record time. Surely, he is in the shadow of Michael Phelps, however he really stole the show in one of his biggest event by winning the Gold Medal. Not only did he win the Gold Medal in world record time, he also finished the men's 200m medley in 3rd place in less than an hour after winning the last race, winning the Bronze Medal. Congratulations in winning 4 medals for the United States thus far as we watched in awe History in the Making at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

Michael Phelps - what else is there to say. He is being compared to Michael Jordan and Tiger Woods, rightfully so because his records speak for itself. As I watched a news report about him recently, it was said that his heart beats twice as fast as of a normal human being. My daughter even compared him to one of the greatest Triple Crown Winner "Secretariat" because of the horse's enlarged heart. Check out this video and History in the Making at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, Michael Phelps winning his 6th Gold Medal.
The night for me ended with the much anticipated all around finals for the women's Gymnastics. Watching the men's gymnastics the past few days, it was the Chinese delegation of the gymnasts that dominated the competition and winning the top podium with the United States giving all they had winning a great Bronze Medal. The very young strong women Chinese athletes proved in the team competition, especially winning the Gold Medal in the team competition, that they are a team to be reckoned with along with Russia and Romania. The Russian born American Nastia Liukin, Gold Medal and teammate Shawn Johnson winning the Silver Medal respectfully is one of the greatest moments in U.S. history of the Olympics. Nastia's gracefully strong performance in all three categories was the girl to beat after her stellar routine on the uneven bars. After the balance beam, Shawn Johnson had to give it her all by not holding back on her floor routine and received the same score as Liukin. Between the ballerina Nastia Liukin and the powerful, but gracious Shawn Johnson, the difference was only six-tenths of a point. As I watched them receiving their Gold & Silver Medal, my eyes were getting teary while listening to the National Anthem and feeling the proud moment to live in this great country. In the end it was well worth staying up late watching these events. Congratulations - it was History in the Making at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Watching both of these gymnastics, I was really surprised of their unselfishness and the actions of their parents not pushing them into gymnastics. They are in the sport of gymnastics because they love what they are doing.

Hi Petra,
Like you I've loved watching all the athletes. They're an amazing bunch. I did an Olympic post myself a few days ago and how connected I feel about them.
Also seeing the venue makes me want to see Beijing one more time, I'd love to see the "bird's nest" for myself.
Thanks for the great photos!
I get chills every time the Olympics come around! I love 'em. The only regular positive thing that we humans on the planet get together for.
HI PETRA!
The Olympics are so good this year! I'm getting very little sleep...I'm trying to watch it all and it stays on very late at night! But I'm so enjoying it!!
Make the MOST of TODAY!
