Annie Pfeiffer Chapel - Hallmark of Frank Lloyd Wright in Lakeland FL
I am always captivated with the history of a city, a piece of property, art, and buildings. Florida Southern College in Lakeland FL has the greatest collection of the world's most innovative architects, Frank Lloyd Wright, on its campus and his most widely recognized building is The Annie Pfeiffer Chapel.

Frank Lloyd Wright developed an organic style of architecture by working with the environment than controlling it. His own description of the West Campus was "the cultural value of organic buildings well suited to time, purpose, and place." The Annie Pfeiffer Chapel was constructed mostly by student labor from 1939 to 1941 at a cost of $100,000, it became the physical and spiritual center of his "Child of the Sun" campus collection, visioning Wright's desire of being lifted "out of the ground, into the light..." with thousand colored pieces of decorative glass to allow natural light. Just like to a child's imagination of the colored pieces of glass, they are little jewels.
Erected on a gentle slope, the tower of Annie Pfeiffer Chapel is referred lovingly as "the bicycle rack in the sky" and "the bow-tie" because of the wrought iron work and the exterior concrete design. The Chapel recently received a facelift in a joint effort to preserve, conserve and rescue our nation's most significant cultural and heritage resources under the Save America's Treasure program.
From my personal standpoint of view as I have visited the inside of the chapel either when my daughter played in an orchestra ensemble or at a school function. Each time I visit, the Annie Pfeiffer Chapel is inspiring with its design -truly captivating. It certainly brings me peace and tranquility to body, spirit and soul.
The Annie Pfeiffer Chapel is considered Frank Lloyd Wrights Hallmark in Lakeland FL. The first building to be constructed. It is also one of the most photographed buildings on the Florida Southern College Campus, which is also one of the 12 other structures that Frank Lloyd Wright so magnificently designed.
